…Mutesa II was allowed to return in 1955 as a result of a concession by the British government, and as the power of the royalists grew stronger, members of the UNC from the north and west who were dissatisfied with Buganda politics left the party and founded the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) in 1959. Meanwhile, the royalists formed a political party called Kabaka Yekka (KY) in 1961, and during the independence negotiations with Britain, they insisted that the Kingdom of Buganda should be separated from the rest of Uganda, and boycotted the general elections for the Legislative Council that same year.
