…After graduating from Oxford University in 1860, he was ordained in the Church of England, but resigned due to poor health. In 1869, he became the librarian at Lambeth Palace (the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury), where he devoted himself to historical research and writing. His major work, A Brief History of the English Nation (1874), is a large work of over 1,000 pages, even though it is called a brief history. It is a representative general history of England and was a favorite read in Japan. His other works include The Formation of England (1882) and The Conquest of England (1883). …
