Mannequin - Mannequin (English spelling)

In French, it is called mannequin, and it can mean (1) a human body model for art or medical use, (2) a stand for hanging clothes, (3) a dress stand, (4) a mannequin doll, (5) a fashion model, etc. In Japan, at the beginning of the Taisho era, the name Mannequin Club was used to refer to a group of fashion models, as it was disliked that models at the time meant nudes. In the Showa era, female sales clerks sent to department stores to promote new products were called mannequin girls, which became a popular term at the time. Today, organizations that send sales staff and demonstrators to department stores, supermarkets, exhibition halls, etc. are called mannequin introduction offices, and they mediate employment and job hunting with the permission of the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Mannequins usually refer to mannequins for clothing, while moving mannequins are called fashion models or mannequins. Professional models as we know them today first appeared in the early 20th century, when Parisian couturier Paul Poiret (1879-1944) held shows around the country with his own models.

フランス語ではマヌカンといい、(1)美術、医学用の人体模型、(2)服をかける人台、(3)ドレススタンド、(4)マネキン人形、(5)ファッション・モデル、などの意味がある。日本では、大正の初め、ファッション・モデルのグループとしてマネキンクラブの名が用いられたが、これは、当時モデルといえばヌードを意味するのを嫌ってのことという。昭和に入ってからは、新商品の宣伝販売にデパートに派遣される女子店員をマネキンガールといい、当時の流行語となった。今日では、デパート、スーパー、展示場などへの販売スタッフやデモンストレーターを派遣する組織をマネキン紹介所といい、厚生労働大臣の許可を受けて求人・求職を斡旋(あっせん)している。

　マネキンは普通、衣装用のマネキン人形をさしており、動くマネキンのほうは、ファッション・モデル、あるいはマヌカンの語が使われる。現在のような職業人としてのモデルが登場したのは20世紀初めのことで、パリのクチュリエ、ポール・ポワレPaul Poiret（1879―1944）が専属のモデルを連れて各地でショーを開いたのが最初である。
