Muntjac (English spelling) - Lesser Muntjac
A small mammal of the Cervidae family, of the even-toed order, whose males have horns and fang-like canines (illustration). Also known as the Formosan Muntjac. Inhabits southern China and Taiwan. Shoulder height is 30-40cm, body length 48-70cm, and weight is around 7.5kg. It has short limbs, a rounded back, and short, smooth, yellow to reddish brown fur. Males have forked horns about 9cm long, and long, fang-like canines on their upper jaw that protrude outside the mouth. A protuberance extending from the base of the horn seat passes above and reaches in front of the eye, and on the inside of this is a long, narrow opening in the frontal gland bordered by black hair that resembles an eye, hence the name Four-eyed Muntjac.
