Jean de La Bruyère

French moralist. Born into the middle class of Paris, he studied law at the University of Orléans and became a lawyer, but there is no evidence that he ever argued in court. In 1673, he accepted the position of treasurer at Caen, but instead of going to Caen, he spent his days in Paris reading, thinking, and observing people. In 1684, on the recommendation of Bossuet, he became a tutor to the grandson of the Grand Duke of Condé, which gave him the opportunity to experience the realities of the court and the great nobility, but at the same time he struggled with his distracted and disobedient pupil, and experienced the sorrows of court service. After his duties as a tutor ended, he continued to serve the Condé family, and was given a modest but stable life and an excellent opportunity to observe people.

フランスのモラリスト。パリの小市民の出身で，オルレアン大学で法律を学び，弁護士となるが，法廷で弁論を行った形跡はない。1673年カンの会計総務の官職を買うが，現地には赴かずパリで読書と思索と人間観察の日々を送った。84年ボシュエの推挙で大コンデ公の孫の家庭教師となり，宮廷や大貴族の実態に触れる機会を得るが，同時に注意力散漫で聞きわけのない弟子に手を焼き，宮仕えの悲哀も味わった。家庭教師の任務終了後も引き続きコンデ家に仕え，つつましいながらも安定した生活と絶好の人間観察の場を与えられた。
