1645‐96 French moralist. Born into the middle class of Paris, he studied law at the University of Orléans and became a lawyer, but there is no evidence that he ever argued in court. In 1673, he accepted the position of treasurer at Caen, but instead of going to Caen, he spent his days in Paris reading, thinking, and observing people. In 1684, on the recommendation of Bossuet, he became a tutor to the grandson of the Grand Duke of Condé, which gave him the opportunity to experience the realities of the court and the great nobility, but at the same time he struggled with his distracted and disobedient pupil, and experienced the sorrows of court service. After his duties as a tutor ended, he continued to serve the Condé family, and was given a modest but stable life and an excellent opportunity to observe people.
