〘noun〙 (syntax)⸨syntax⸩① A branch that studies theories and rules regarding the combination of symbols without considering their meaning. Introduced into logic by Carnap. ② The totality of rules, such as order and dominance, for arranging linguistic units (words, etc.) in a language to make sentences. Also, a branch of grammar that studies this. In languages where linguistic units undergo regular inflection and derivation, this (and the branch that studies it) is called morphology, and is often contrasted with syntax. Syntax.
