Winckelmann, Johann (Joachim)
Born: December 9, 1717, Stendal
[Died] June 8, 1768. Trieste German archaeologist and art historian. Born into a poor shoemaker's family. Fascinated by Greek and Latin from high school, he entered the University of Halle in 1738 to study theology, and from 1741 to study medicine at the University of Jena. From 1748 to 1754 he served as librarian for the Count of Bünnau. His friendship with the painter Esel deepened his interest in Greek art and literature. He converted to Catholicism and in 1755 was awarded a royal scholarship to study in Rome. In 1763 he became responsible for ancient artefacts and documents at the Vatican Library. He published many excellent research works, including his first work, "The Imitation of Greek Art" (1755), which praised ancient art, and not only became the founder of research into the history of ancient art, but also led the neoclassical trend of his time with his view of classical art as the model.
