A former town in Seta County, in the central part of Gunma Prefecture, at the southern foot of Mount Akagi. The city center developed as a castle town and market town, and is served by the Jomo Electric Railway, making it a distribution center for local goods. The town produces rice, wheat, shiitake mushrooms, and vegetables, and also raises livestock. In December 2004, it was incorporated into Maebashi City along with Miyagi Village and Kasukawa Village in Seta County. Area: 19.76 km2 . Population: 16,982 (2003). 群馬県中央部,赤城山南麓の勢多(せた)郡の旧町。中心市街は城下町,市場町として発達,上毛電鉄が通じ,地方物資の集散地となっている。米,麦,シイタケ,野菜を産し,畜産も行う。2004年12月勢田郡宮城村,粕川村と前橋市へ編入。19.76km2。1万6982人(2003)。
