Japan-US-Canada Fisheries Treaty

A treaty between Japan, the United States, and Canada regarding fishing in the North Pacific Ocean east of 175°W longitude. It was concluded in 1952. Japan was prohibited from catching salmon and trout in these waters, and halibut and herring off the coasts of the United States and Canada, in the form of a voluntary restraint. In 1977, the Japan-US Fisheries Agreement came into effect with the establishment of a 200-mile US zone, and in 1979, a revised protocol to the Japan-US-Canada Fisheries Agreement came into effect. Japan was permitted to fish for salmon and trout in the 200-mile US zone west of 175°W longitude, but after 1988, the quota was set at zero. Furthermore, in 1992, the four countries of Japan, the United States, Canada, and Russia signed the North Pacific Salmon and Trout Conservation Treaty, which banned all fishing of salmon and trout in the high seas of the North Pacific.

西経175°以東の北太平洋での漁業に関する日本・米国・カナダ間の条約。1952年締結。日本は同水域のサケ・マス，米加沿岸沖合のオヒョウ・ニシンなどの漁獲を自発的抑止という形で禁じられた。1977年米国の200カイリ水域設定に伴い日米漁業協定が，1979年には日米加漁業協定の改定議定書が発効。西経175°以西の米国200カイリ水域での日本のサケ・マス漁は認められたが，1988年以後は割当てゼロとなった。さらに1992年には日米加露４ヵ国が北太平洋サケ・マス保存条約を結び，北太平洋の公海でのサケ・マスの漁獲はすべて禁止された。
