A treaty between Japan, the United States, and Canada regarding fishing in the North Pacific Ocean east of 175°W longitude. It was concluded in 1952. Japan was prohibited from catching salmon and trout in these waters, and halibut and herring off the coasts of the United States and Canada, in the form of a voluntary restraint. In 1977, the Japan-US Fisheries Agreement came into effect with the establishment of a 200-mile US zone, and in 1979, a revised protocol to the Japan-US-Canada Fisheries Agreement came into effect. Japan was permitted to fish for salmon and trout in the 200-mile US zone west of 175°W longitude, but after 1988, the quota was set at zero. Furthermore, in 1992, the four countries of Japan, the United States, Canada, and Russia signed the North Pacific Salmon and Trout Conservation Treaty, which banned all fishing of salmon and trout in the high seas of the North Pacific. →Related topics Fisheries | Salmon and trout fishing | Japan-US Fisheries Negotiations Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
