Castiglione, Baldassare

Japanese: カスティリオーネ(英語表記)Castiglione, Baldassare
Castiglione, Baldassare
Born December 6, 1478 in Casatico, near Mantua, Italy
Died: February 2, 1529. Toledo, Spain. Italian courtier, diplomat, and writer. Born to a noble family connected to the Gonzaga family. Served in the courts of Milan, Mantua, Urbino, and other cities, and wrote Il cortegiano (1513-18) based on his experiences. This work is written in the form of a dialogue, and explains how the ideal courtier of the time should be. It is often compared to Machiavelli's The Prince, and captures the Renaissance image of man from the courtier's perspective. Other works he wrote include the pastoral poem Tirsi (1506). In his later years, he was appointed ambassador to Spain by Pope Clement VII and was posted to Madrid, where he died of illness in Toledo.
