A city in the central-eastern part of Minas Gerais state, inland of southeastern Brazil. It is located about 80 km east-northeast of the state capital Belo Horizonte, in the southern Espinhaço mountain range. The city has developed as a mining center, with one of the world's largest iron deposits in the surrounding area. The ore from the deposit is high-grade hematite, with an average iron content of over 65%, and is known as itabirite. The ore is supplied as raw material to the Usiminas steelworks in Ipatinga, about 70 km east, and is also transported by rail along the Doce River to the port of Vitoria on the Atlantic coast for shipment.
