In 33, Henry the Navigator was granted military and trading rights along the coast of the African continent, and he repeatedly sent his men down the west coast of Africa to try to reach the gold-producing coast of Guinea. In 49, the first trading post was established on the island of Arguin near Cape Branco. At the same time, the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores were also colonized.
