The cherry blossoms, which are said to have been sacred trees of Zao Gongen by En no Gyoja, are famous for filling a mountain with trees donated by pilgrims and others, including Shimo Senbon near Yoshino Shrine, Naka Senbon near Nyoirin-ji Temple, Kami Senbon near Yoshino Mikumari Shrine, and Oku Senbon near Saigyo-an. They are also a popular subject of poetry, and poems about Yoshino's cherry blossoms begin in the Kokinshu, but until the mid-Heian period, they were more often associated with mountain worship and were written about as snowy mountains. ...
