Kato Dementia Hospital

A mental hospital is a facility that is equipped with both inpatient and outpatient care facilities and is designed to treat and protect the mentally disabled. In the past, it was called a "crazy hospital," a "insane hospital," or a "brain hospital," but now it is called a "psychiatric hospital."

Facilities for asylum of the mentally ill have a long history, but the oldest recorded one is said to have been opened in Jerusalem in 491. After that, around the 8th century, facilities were established in Islamic countries such as Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo. In Western countries, the mentally ill were treated like criminals, and in the 16th and 17th centuries, they were even treated as witches.
