Syr-dar'ya River

Japanese: シル･ダリヤ[川]（英語表記）Syr‐dar’ya

A river in Central Asia. It means "yellow river". In ancient Greece it was called the Iaxartēs River. The Naryn River in the western Tian Shan and the Kara Darya join in the eastern part of the Fergana Basin in the eastern part of the Republic of Uzbekistan to form the Syr Darya, which flows westward and then northwestward into the Republic of Kazakhstan and empties into the Aral Sea. Its total length is 2,212 km, and its headwaters are 3,019 km. Its drainage area is about 220,000 km2. Its water is used for irrigation in the basin through numerous canals and reservoirs, but because it flows through an arid region, evaporation is high, and the water level of the Aral Sea is dropping significantly.

中央アジアの河川。〈黄色い川〉の意味。古代ギリシアではヤクサルテスIaxartēs川と呼んだ。天山山脈西部のナリン川とカラ･ダリヤがウズベキスタン共和国東部のフェルガナ盆地東部で合流してシル･ダリヤとなり，西流ののち北西流してカザフスタン共和国に入り，アラル海へ注ぐ。全長2212km，ナリン川水源からは3019km。流域面積約22万km2。その水は多数の運河･貯水池により流域地帯の灌漑に利用されているが，乾燥地域を流れるために蒸発量が多く，アラル海の水位低下が著しい。
