"Katsura River Jizo Chronicle"

The style of the performance centered on large, elaborately designed, elegant umbrellas, and included scenes from well-known stories, such as "Kuro Hangan Goshu Shimogo no Tai," "Hatakeyama Rokuro Yuinohama Kassenjin Hijiri no Tai," "Gojo Tachi Keijo no Tai," and other props and costumed groups that reflected the customs of the time, accompanied by flutes, drums, and small drums. In 1416 (Oei 23), when the stone Jizo of Katsura in Kyoto-sai showed a miraculous omen, people from the capital dressed up in elegant costumes and flocked to the site almost every day. The Katsura River Jizo-ki, which describes the event, lists over 60 themes related to historical events from around the world, past and present, such as "The scene where Prince Kamimiya kills the rebel Moriya," "Yorimasa defeats the Nue," and "The Festival at Hongmen." According to the Kyogaku Shiyosho and Daijo-in Temple and Shrine Miscellaneous Records, in the latter half of the 15th century in Nara, large-scale elegant festivals were held during the Bon Festival mainly by local lords such as the Furuichi clan, and it was from around that time that large numbers of dancers could be seen around musical instruments.
