...The calyx is persistent with 5-6 petals and 7-8 petals, which open in sunlight. Several species of Lewisia are edible, and the swollen root of L. rediviva Pursh (bitter root), found in the arid northwestern region, was often used as food by Native Americans. It grows well in well-drained and sunny locations, so it is planted in volcanic sand or Kanuma soil in pots, but it dislikes calcareous soil and is sensitive to heat, so it should be kept in partial shade and cool in summer.
