...Abe no Doji, Seimei's childhood name, means a boy who grew up in Abeno (currently in Osaka City). Doji were slaves to a large temple who performed manual labor and other chores, and sometimes performed divination and prayer as low-ranking onmyouji and chantmasters. Abeno Village is located halfway between Shitennoji and Sumiyoshi Shrine, and it is thought that there may have been a settlement of low-ranking onmyouji and chantmasters called Abeno Doji here. Also, at Hijiri Shrine in Shinodamori (currently in Izumi City) near Abeno, there is a subordinate shrine called Kuzunoha Shrine, and there was an onmyouji village in the vicinity until the end of the Edo period, where calendars and other items were distributed.
