Osaka Expo
The first World Expo held in Asia was held in Senri Hills, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, in 1970. Its official name was the Japan World Expo. It is also called EXPO'70. The basic theme was "Progress and Harmony of Mankind" and it took place from March 14th (open to the public from the 15th) to September 13th. The venue area was about 350ha. There were 77 participating countries (44 pavilions) and 34 participating companies (32 pavilions). The theme song was "Hello from Countries of the World" (Haruo Minami and others). The total number of visitors during the event reached 64,218,770, the highest in the history of World Expos. The "Moon Rock" exhibited in the American Pavilion was popular, and the "Tower of the Sun" (70m high) by Taro Okamoto was a symbolic presence (still extant). It is considered an event that symbolizes Japan's high economic growth period. The site of the exposition is now Expo Park, owned and maintained by the Japan World Exposition Memorial Organization.
