Japanese: しり(尻∥臀) - しり（英語表記）hip

In quadrupeds, this term loosely refers to the area behind the base of the hind legs and centered on the anus, but is mainly used for quadrupedal mammals. In humans, it is the bulging part of the lower back, where the heel rests when sitting upright in the Japanese style, and where the seat of a chair rests. In anatomy, it is called the buttocks, and is bordered above by the arching iliac crest (the upper edge of the ilium) and below by a groove called the gluteal sulcus, which runs horizontally between the thigh and the buttocks.

四足動物において，後肢の付け根より後方にあって肛門を中心とする部域を漠然と指すことばだが，主として四足歩行性哺乳類に対して用いられる。ヒトでは背中の下部の膨らんだ部分で，日本式に正座すると〈かかと〉がつき，いすに座るとその座面にあたるところである。解剖学では〈臀部（でんぶ）〉といい，上は弓形に走る腸骨稜(腸骨の上のへり)によって腰部と境され，下は大腿との間を水平に走る〈臀溝〉という溝で境されている。
