A town in Kasuya County, adjacent to Fukuoka City, in the mid-west of Fukuoka Prefecture. It is located in the Fukuoka Plain. It rapidly developed as a coal mining town after a naval coal mine was opened in 1889. After World War II, the Japanese National Railways operated the mine, but it closed in 1964.
