A feudal lord of the early modern period. Born in Owari Province. Hidekatsu served both the Oda and Toyotomi clans, and under Hideyoshi held 44,000 koku in Daisho-ji, Kaga. From 1598 (Keicho 3), he was given 60,000 koku in Shibata, Echigo, and later confirmed by Tokugawa Ieyasu. During the time of Nobukatsu, his younger brother Yoshikatsu was given 50,000 koku. In 1860 (Man'en 1), his title was raised to 100,000 koku. The head of the family was appointed to the rank of Jugo no Kami, Izumo no Kami, and Shuzen no Kami, among other positions. After the Meiji Restoration, he became a viscount. Yoshikatsu, who was also given a share of the fief, held 14,000 koku in Soumi, Echigo, including the new fields. 近世大名。尾張国の出身。秀勝は織田・豊臣両氏に仕え,秀吉の下で加賀大聖寺4万4000石を領有。1598年(慶長3)から越後新発田(しばた)6万石となり,のち徳川家康より安堵。宣勝のとき弟善勝に分知して5万石。1860年(万延1)に至り,高直しされて10万石となる。当主は従五位下伯耆守,出雲守,主膳正などに叙任。維新後は子爵。なお分知をうけた善勝は,新田分などを含めて越後沢海(そうみ)1万4000石を領有。
