...They are decorated with patterns drawn with lines made with a sharp tool (Heragaki patterns), simple line patterns using the edges of shells, cedar patterns, leaf patterns, etc. At present, Onga River-style pottery is further subdivided, and the "Itazuke-style pottery" associated with the moated settlement at the Itazuke site in Fukuoka City is considered to be the oldest. However, there is a question as to whether this should be recognized as the oldest Yayoi pottery, and there is a growing view that pottery that precedes the Itazuke-style, which has traditionally been treated as late Jomon pottery, is the oldest Yayoi pottery.
