Carolina allspice

It is a deciduous shrub of the family Celastrusaceae that grows to a height of 2-3m and is planted in gardens as a flowering tree and also grown for cut flowers. The new branches and petioles are hairy, and the undersides of the leaves are densely covered with short soft hairs. The leaves are broad ovate to oblong, 5-12cm long. The flowers grow on new branches that arise from the axils of the previous year's branches, are about 4-6cm in diameter, are dark red-purple as their name suggests, and have a strong fragrance. They flower from May to July. The bark is also fragrant, and it is said that Native Americans used it as a spice. C. fertilis Walt. resembles C. monadelpha, but its flowers are reddish brown and have almost no fragrance, and the undersides of the leaves are hairless.

高さ2～3mになるロウバイ科の落葉低木で，花木として庭園に栽植され，また切花にもされる。新枝や葉柄は有毛，葉の裏面も短軟毛を密生する。葉は広卵形から長楕円形，長さ5～12cm。花は前年枝の葉腋（ようえき）から生じる新枝につき，径4～6cmほど，名前のように暗紅紫色で，強い芳香がある。花期は5～7月。樹皮にも芳香があり，インディアンは香辛料として使用していたという。アメリカロウバイC.fertilis Walt.はクロバナロウバイに似るが花は赤褐色で芳香がほとんどなく，葉の裏は無毛である。
