…After Shah Rukh's death, the country fell into chaos, Ulugh Beg was killed by assassins hired by his son, and the Timurid dynasty rapidly declined. The great observatory he built was buried under the earth and its location was unknown, but it was excavated by Soviet scientists in 1908, and after more than 40 years of effort, spanning the First and Second World Wars, its entirety was revealed, and in 1950 Kari Niyazov published an excellent report. Ulugh Beg's star catalog was also incorporated into the star atlas of the 17th century Polish astronomer Hevelius. …
