One of the leading painters of early Netherlandish painting. Born in Haarlem. Considered the successor to van der Weyden, his works are characterized by meditative expression in contrast to the dramatic depictions of van der Weyden. He mainly painted religious paintings, such as the Eucharist Altarpiece (1467, St. Peter's Cathedral, Leuven), and introduced new ideas to the depiction of landscape backgrounds.
