One of the leading painters of early Netherlandish painting. Born in Haarlem. Considered the successor to van der Weyden, his works are characterized by meditative expression in contrast to the dramatic depictions of van der Weyden. He mainly painted religious paintings, such as the Eucharist Altarpiece (1467, St. Peter's Cathedral, Leuven), and introduced new ideas to the depiction of landscape backgrounds. 初期ネーデルラント絵画の代表的画家の一人。ハールレム生れ。ファン・デル・ウェイデンの後継者とされるが，その劇的描写に対し瞑想的表現を特色とする。《聖餐の祭壇画》（1467年，ルーバン，シント・ペーテル聖堂蔵）など，おもに宗教画を描き，背景の風景描写に新味を打ち出した。
