This was followed by Kaibara Ekiken's Kafu (Flower Collection) (1698) and Ito Sannojo (Ihei)'s Kadan Chikinsho (Flower Bed and Garden) (1695), and over 70 gardening books were written throughout the Edo period. Beginning with Anrakuan Sakuden's Hyakutsubakishu (Collection of One Hundred Camellias) (1630), specialized books on flowers such as azaleas, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, peonies, plums, morning glories, irises, and dianthus were published, and many varieties were created for their leaves, such as maples, tricolor apples, celery, pine orchids, and Dendrobiums. …
