Shugetsu Tokan

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A painter-monk from the late Muromachi period. According to art histories from the Edo period, he was originally a samurai who served the Shimazu clan of Satsuma, and his surname was Takagi. After leaving the priesthood, he went to Unkoku-an in Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture), where he became a disciple of Sesshu. In 1490 (Entoku 2), he was given a "Self-Portrait" of Sesshu at the age of 71 (a copy still exists, in the possession of the Fujita Museum of Art). In 1492 (Meio 1), he returned to his hometown of Satsuma, and later traveled to Ming, where he painted "West Lake" (1496, in the possession of the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art) at the Beijing Huidongguan. It is said that he died after returning to Japan at the age of over 70. A considerable number of his works have been handed down, and all of them are direct successors of Sesshu's style. They are characterized by their firm brushwork and emphasis on form. 室町後期の画僧。江戸時代の画史類は,もと薩摩の島津氏に仕えた武士で,姓を高城と伝える。出家して周防(山口県)の雲谷庵に赴き,雪舟の弟子となる。延徳2(1490)年に雪舟71歳の「自画像」を与えられる(模本が現存,藤田美術館蔵)。明応1(1492)年,薩摩へ帰郷し,その後明に渡って,北京会同館で「西湖図」(1496,石川県立美術館蔵)を描いた。帰国後七十余歳で没したと伝える。かなりの数の作品が伝わり,いずれも雪舟様式を直接的に継承したものである。筆致が固く,形態感を強調する点に特色がある。雪舟筆と伝える花鳥図屏風のうちには,秋月およびその系統の画家の作品が含まれていると推測される。<参考文献>『水墨美術大系』7巻
