Fetal movement

This refers to the movement of the fetus inside the uterus. Pregnant women become aware of fetal movement from around the 20th week of pregnancy, but first-time mothers may notice it a little later. At first, it feels like a small bird flapping its wings in your hand, and then it feels as if the fetus's limbs are hitting the uterine wall. Fetal movement becomes more active from around the eighth month, and as you approach full term, the amount of amniotic fluid decreases and fetal movement calms down. Fetal movement is physiological, and feeling it several times a day is proof that the fetus is healthy, but if it moves around actively for a while and then you no longer feel it at all, you should see a doctor.

Recently, ultrasound examination has made it possible to observe fetal movements from around the 10th week of pregnancy, allowing detailed examination of fetal movements associated with fetal development and is considered important for early diagnosis.

子宮内における胎児の運動をいう。妊婦は妊娠第20週ころから胎動を自覚するが、初産婦は気づくのがやや遅れる。最初は手の中の小鳥が羽ばたくような感じで、やがて胎児の手足で子宮壁を打つように感ずる。8か月ころから盛んになり、臨月になると羊水が少なくなり胎動も静まる。胎動は生理的なもので、1日に何回か胎動を感ずるのは胎児が元気な証拠であり、一時的に活発に動き回って、以後まったく感じなくなった場合には、診察を受ける必要がある。

　最近では、超音波検査法によって妊娠第10週ころから胎動を観察できるようになり、胎児の発育に伴った運動が詳しく調べられ、早期診断上、重要視されている。
