Died March 6, 1867. Berlin German painter. Studied at the art school in Düsseldorf. From 1811 to 1819, he was active in Rome as the most important painter of the Nazarene school. In 1819, he went to Munich, and in 1825, he became the director of the art school. He created murals on the theme of Greek mythology for the Glyptothek (sculpture gallery), and large murals such as The Last Supper for the Ludwig Cathedral, and worked to revive monumental fresco painting. In 1841, he went to Berlin and planned to create a series of frescoes for a cemetery modeled on Campo Santo in Pisa, but he died before this could be realized. His style is characterized by an eclectic mix of classical forms and the passionate emotional expression of German Romanticism.

[Died] August 23, 1947. Gräfeling German philosopher. He initially studied mathematics and physics, but later switched to philosophy. In 1903 he became an assistant professor at the University of Munich, and in 10 he became a professor at the University of Frankfurt. He sought the foundations of philosophy in psychology, and made every effort to reject the idea that philosophy should be premised on dogmatic ideas. His main works are "Psychologie als Erfahrungswissenschaft" (1897), "Einleitung in die Philosophie" (1901), and "Elementargesetze der bildenden Kunst" (08).

[Died] 253. Civitavecchia Pope from Rome (reigned 251-253), saint. He became pope after a 14-month hiatus caused by the persecution of Emperor Decius. Novatianus became antipope and left the church. He created a system of penance for apostates during the persecution, which sparked controversy. His letters to his friend Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, and others remain. He was martyred when the persecution resumed. He is considered the patron saint of horned livestock, named after him (cornu). His feast day is September 16th.

[Died] October 26, 1874, Mainz. German composer, poet, and writer. After studying counterpoint in Berlin and working as a member of Liszt's group in Weimar, he moved to Vienna after the failure of the premiere of his opera The Barber of Baghdad in 1858, where he became friends with Wagner. After 1865, he composed operas, songs, and choruses in Munich, and was also active as a teacher and writer.

Roman politician of the 1st century BC. He served under Pompey (the Elder). As quaestor (quaestor), he sought political reform, but was opposed by the optimates (optimates). In 65 BC, he was accused of treason, but was saved by M. Cicero's defense.

Dutch biblical scholar and Jesuit priest who taught in Louvain and Rome and wrote extensive commentaries on the Old and New Testaments based on the interpretations of the Church Fathers, especially on the Pentateuch and the Epistles of Paul.

A Roman poet of the 1st century. A friend of Ovid. He wrote fragments of hexagram rhymes about the Sicilian War of 38-36 BC and the death of Cicero, among other things.

ドイツの画家。ジュッセルドルフの美術学校に学ぶ。 1811~19年ローマでナザレ派の最も重要な画家として活躍。 19年ミュンヘンに行き,25年に美術学校の校長となるとともに,グリュプトテーク (彫刻館) にギリシア神話を主題とした壁画を,またルートウィヒ聖堂に『最後の晩餐』そのほかの大壁画を制作し,モニュメンタルなフレスコ画の復興に努める。 41年ベルリンにおもむき,ピサのカンポ・サントをモデルとした共同墓地にフレスコ画の連作を制作する計画を立てたが,実現にいたらぬままに没した。作風は古典的形式とドイツ・ロマン派の情熱的な感情表現との折衷を特徴とする。

ローマ出身の教皇 (在位 251~253) ,聖人。デキウス帝の迫害による 14ヵ月の空位期ののち,教皇となる。その選出をめぐってノウァチアヌスが対立教皇として離教。迫害の際の背教者に対する贖罪制度を設け,論議を呼んだ。友人であるカルタゴ司教キプリアヌスなどへの書簡が残っている。彼は迫害の再開により殉教。その名にちなみ (cornu角) ,角のある家畜の保護聖人とされる。祝日9月 16日。
