…A type of heme protein with iron porphyrin as a prosthetic group, a general term for a substance that undergoes reversible conversion of the valence of heme iron (Fe ²⁺ ⇄Fe ³⁺ +e ^- ), i.e., redox reaction. This is the pigment that CA MacMunn discovered in muscle and other animal tissues in 1886, and called myohematin because it showed an absorption band similar to that of hemin.
