A Soviet Jewish philosopher. He was originally a Menshevik, but after the revolution he cooperated with the Soviet government and became editor-in-chief of Under the Banner of Marxism. He joined the Communist Party in 1928. He was active in criticizing the Bukharinists, but in 1930 he was attacked for being a Menshevik idealist, and thereafter turned to historical research.
