A Soviet Jewish philosopher. He was originally a Menshevik, but after the revolution he cooperated with the Soviet government and became editor-in-chief of Under the Banner of Marxism. He joined the Communist Party in 1928. He was active in criticizing the Bukharinists, but in 1930 he was attacked for being a Menshevik idealist, and thereafter turned to historical research. His main work is An Introduction to Dialectical Materialist Philosophy (1915).

ソ連のユダヤ系哲学者。初めメンシェビキ，革命後ソビエト政権に協力し，《マルクス主義の旗の下に》の編集責任者となる。1928年共産党入党。ブハーリン派批判などで活躍したが，1930年にメンシェビキ的観念論だとして攻撃され，以後は歴史研究に転じた。主著《弁証法的唯物論哲学入門》（1915年）。
