Unshu abacus - Unshu abacus

Japanese: 雲州そろばん - うんしゅうそろばん

A regional brand of Shimane prefecture, Chugoku region.
It is produced in Okuizumo Town, Nita County. It began in the late Edo period, during the Tenpo era (1830-1844), when carpenter Murakami Kichigoro modeled his abacus on Hiroshima abacus and made them using local plum, sooted bamboo, and oak. After that, production increased after the development of a hand-cranked potter's wheel for carving the beads. It is known throughout the country as a high-quality abacus that is sturdy and easy to use. It is a traditional craft of Shimane Prefecture. In May 1985, it was designated as a traditional craft of the country by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (currently the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).

中国地方、島根県の地域ブランド。
仁多郡奥出雲町で生産されている。江戸時代後期の天保年間(1830年〜1844年)、大工・村上吉五郎が広島のそろばんを手本に地元の梅・煤竹・樫を使ってつくったのが端緒。その後、珠を削る手回しのろくろが開発されてから生産量が増加した。堅牢で使いやすい高級そろばんとして全国に知られている。島根県ふるさと伝統工芸品。1985(昭和60)年5月、通商産業大臣(現・経済産業大臣)によって国の伝統的工芸品に指定。
