Born: November 13, 1874 in Kyoto [Died] August 19, 1962. Organic chemist at Takarazuka. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University (1899). Studied abroad at the University of Kiel, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and the Davy-Faraday Institute of the Royal Institution in London. Professor at Tohoku Imperial University (1911) and senior researcher at the RIKEN Institute. Conducted structural research on the main components of lacquer, monkshood alkaloids, indole derivatives, components of safflower root, and other natural organic compounds, research on the synthesis of photosensitive pigments, dyes, and other compounds, and edited and published the Japanese Chemical Review. Dean of the Science Faculty of Hokkaido University and Osaka University, and professor of the Dye Chemistry Department of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, he contributed to the establishment and operation of both universities. President of Osaka University (43). Received the Imperial Academy Prize in 1917 for his research on the main components of lacquer. Received the Order of Culture in 1949. Member of the Imperial Academy (26) and Member of the German National Academy (36).
