Halibut (English name) Ulmus laciniata

Japanese: オヒョウ(英語表記)Ulmus laciniata
Halibut (English name) Ulmus laciniata
It is a deciduous tall tree of the elm family, and grows in the mountainous regions of Japan from central Honshu northward. The leaves are asymmetrically obovate, 10-15cm long, and split broadly into three at the top, with the tip of each lobe extending long like a tail, giving the leaf a very distinctive shape. The bark has noticeable fissures. The fibers of this bark are strong, and it was used as a fiber plant by the Ainu people in ancient times. Like elms, the wood is useful for crafts, construction materials, and shipbuilding materials. The fruit has wings, just like elms.
