A bird of the maple family. A sparrow-like pet bird with a wingspan of 5 cm. A species developed in Japan from the Pale-legged Kingfisher, found in Southeast Asia and southern China, or by crossbreeding the Pale-legged Kingfisher with other maple birds. It is easy to breed in a cage, and is good at raising its young, so it is often used as a foster parent for other maple birds such as the zebra finch. Its plumage comes in white, light brown, and spots with these colors, and there are varieties such as the Bonten and Chiyoda, which have curled feathers on the head and chest.
