Ligand field

...A theory that deals with the interaction between the central metal ion and ligands in a metal complex. It is a modification of the crystal field theory, which considers this interaction to be a pure electrostatic bond, to take covalent bonding into account, but sometimes the two are used interchangeably. In other words, the central metal ion is considered to be a cation, and the ligands surrounding it are all approximated as negative point charges (even neutral ligands are considered to have the negative end of the dipole pointing toward the central metal ion), and the crystal field theory considers what the energy levels of the electrons of the central metal ion will be when placed in an electrostatic field (called a crystalline field) caused by the charge, ignoring the effect of the metal ion on the electron orbitals of the ligands.
