Mochtar Lubis

1922‐2004
Indonesian writer and journalist. Born in West Sumatra. During the Japanese occupation, he worked for Domei Press Agency, and during the independence revolution, he founded Antara News Agency with Adam Malik and others. He gained fame as a writer with No Tomorrow (1950), which looked at the life and death of guerilla soldiers in the independence war, and The Endless Road (1952), which portrayed the passion and barbarism of the revolution through the story of a timid teacher. He later published novels such as Twilight in Jakarta (1963), which exposed the corruption of the privileged class after independence, and also criticized the dictatorship of the Sukarno regime as editor of the newspaper Indonesia Raya.

インドネシアの作家，ジャーナリスト。西スマトラ生れ。日本軍の占領中，同盟通信社に勤め，独立革命期にアダム･マリクらとアンタラ通信社を設立。独立戦争のゲリラ兵の生と死を見つめた《明日はない》(1950)，小心な一教師の姿を通して革命の情熱，野蛮を描く《果てしなき道》(1952)で作家として名声を得る。その後，独立後の特権階級の腐敗をえぐった《ジャカルタの黄昏》(1963)などの小説を発表する一方，《インドネシア･ラヤ》紙を主宰してスカルノ政権の独裁を告発。
