Kankyu - Kankyu

Japanese: 貫休 - かんきゅう
Kankyu - Kankyu

A monk from the Five Dynasties in the late Tang Dynasty of China. Born in Wuzhou Lanxi (Jinhua County, Zhejiang Province). He spent the last 10 years of his life in Shu, where he was treated well by Wang Jian (847-918). His common surname was Jiang. His pen name was Deyin. He was known as Zengetsu Daishi, and was famous for his poetry, calligraphy, and Taoist and Buddhist paintings, especially his paintings of arhat. The arhat is said to have been perceived in a dream, and has a strange appearance called Houmei Daimoku or Kobo Bonso. Many copies were made of this work at the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, and two versions of "Arhat Paintings" attributed to Kankyu have been passed down to Japan as Zengetsu-style paintings: a sumi-e version (such as the Nezu Museum version) and a colored version of the Sixteen Arhat (such as the Imperial Collection version). His collection of poetry and prose, "Zengetsushu," has been handed down, although some parts are missing.
