Year of death: April 18, 1794 (May 17, 1794) Year of birth: Kyoho 13 (1728) A painter from the mid-Edo period. Commonly known as Tame-no-shin, his pen name was Shicho and his pen name Maruyama. Born into a merchant family in Nagasaki, he studied under Ishizaki Gentoku and then learned Western-style painting techniques from a Dutchman. He was adopted by Araki Motoyoshi, who shared his surname, and after Genkei resigned in 1766, he took over as a Chinese painting expert and official painter. Shiba Kokan, who came to Nagasaki in 1788, visited Motoyoshi and harshly criticized his paintings in his Saiyu Nikki, calling them "completely poor," but perhaps this was because he sought knowledge of oil painting and glass painting but was unable to gain it. He also taught his son Ishizaki Yushi and others. His works include "Go Play at the Water Pavilion" and "Two Carp" (both in the collection of the Kobe City Museum).
