[Died] April 15, 1980. Tokyo novelist. Born into the Count Arima family, the former feudal lord of Kurume, he attended Gakushuin Elementary School, then Seikei Senior High School and Waseda First Senior High School, but dropped out of both. His father, Yoriyasu, was once imprisoned as a suspected war criminal. He won the Naoki Prize for his collection of short stories, "Lifelong Untried Prisoner" (1954). While he liked to write about people who were ostracized for reasons of lineage or other reasons, he wrote "Forty Thousand Witnesses" (58) and "The Squirrel and the American" (59), and together with Matsumoto Seicho, he was a key figure in the rise of mystery novels. His other works include "Fallen" (58), "Hayama Isshiki Kaigan" (59), and "The Will Delivery Man" (60). He also compiled "Records of the Tokyo Air Raids and War Disasters: A Collection of Records of the Air Raid Experiences of Tokyo Citizens" (73).

小説家。旧久留米藩主の伯爵有馬家に生れ，学習院初等科を経て成蹊高等学校，早稲田第一高等学院に学んだが，いずれも中退。父頼寧 (よりやす) は戦犯容疑者として収監されたこともある。短編集『終身未決囚』 (1954) で直木賞を受賞。血統その他の理由で疎外された人間を好んで取上げる一方，『四万人の目撃者』 (58) ，『リスとアメリカ人』 (59) などを書いて松本清張とともに推理小説興隆のにない手となった。ほかに『失脚』 (58) ，『葉山一色海岸』 (59) ，『遺書配達人』 (60) などがある。また『東京空襲戦災誌－都民の空襲体験記録集－』 (73) をまとめた。
