Kotaro Migishi

Japanese: 三岸好太郎 - みぎしこうたろう
Kotaro Migishi

Western-style painter. Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido (now Sapporo City). In 1921 (Taisho 10), he graduated from Sapporo First Middle School and moved to Tokyo, where he continued to study Western-style painting while still at school, despite the hardships of studying. He exhibited at the Chuo Art Exhibition and the Shunyo-kai Exhibition, and in 1921 he won the Shunyo-kai Prize as the top prize winner. In 1926, he became an exemption from the Shunyo-kai and traveled to China, including Shanghai. He gradually shifted from his early simple style to a more dynamic style, often using clowns as his subject matter. In 1930 (Showa 5), he participated in the founding of the Independent Art Association. In 1933, he switched to a poetic surrealist style of painting, using orchestras, butterflies, and shells as subjects, but in the summer of the following year, he died suddenly of a stomach ulcer in Nagoya while traveling. His widow Setsuko and his eldest son, Kotaro, were both Western-style painters. His representative works include "Boy Clown," "Marionette," "Orchestra," and "Sea and Reflection." In 1967, the Migishi family donated 159 pieces of art, including 61 oil paintings, watercolors and drawings, to the Hokkaido Prefectural Government, and these were used to establish the Hokkaido Museum of Art (now the Hokkaido Migishi Kotaro Museum of Art).
