A term used in Japanese music and dance. (1) The name of a musical part in which all the characters perform a hand dance, characterized by being rhythmic and fast. It contrasts with the slow kudoki. It is typically performed with a taiko drum, called taiko odori-ji, and there are also dances that use only large and small drums. (2) In kabuki music, it is the name of a kage-bayashi (lower seat) piece. It can be performed with vocals or as a gakata (musical instruments only). It depicts a scene in the kuruwa (red courtyard) of Kyoto or Osaka. It is tuned with san-sagari. It is the counterpart of the Edo suga-gaki.
