Kawasaki Steel Corporation
The company started out as Kawasaki Shipyard (now Kawasaki Heavy Industries) Hyogo Plant in 1906, and was spun off and became independent in 1950. It built Japan's first integrated steelworks in Chiba in 1951 and in Mizushima in 1961, and has been aggressively expanding its market share. It has also been active in expanding overseas, building the Tubarão Steelworks in Brazil. Steel plates make up a large proportion of the company's products, and the company is known as "Kawatetsu of Plates." Other products include steel pipes and bar steel. In September 2002, it merged with Nippon Kokan to form JFE Holdings. The company's head office is in Tokyo. In 2011, the company's capital was 147.1 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 3.1955 trillion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is as follows: steel 84, engineering 8, shipbuilding 7, LSI 1.
