A Greek god's name meaning "Three-fold (i.e., very) great Hermes." He was a god of the syncretic religions common in the Hellenistic period, born from the syncretism of the Greek Hermes and the ancient Egyptian Thoth in the Hellenistic environment of Egypt. His original name was Hermes Thoth, but this was his common name. Poimandrēs is another name for him, and Mercurius is his Latin name. Like Hermes and Thoth, this god is in charge of the arts and sciences. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
