A continuous, irregular news publication started by the government of the Italian city-state of Venice in 1536 to inform citizens of the war situation in the Dalmatian region. Details are unknown, but it is said that in addition to selling the printed matter, it was also read out at key locations throughout the city, and since the admission fee to be an audience member or the cost of the printed matter itself was one gazette, the currency of the time, this type of publication came to be called "gazzetta." This is why the custom of naming newspapers "gazette" emerged in later years. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
