Paper money issued during the French Revolution. At the end of 1789, the Constituent Assembly decided to issue 5% interest-bearing public bonds secured by nationalized church property. The name comes from the fact that national property was "assigned" as a guarantee. Interest was abolished at the end of August 1790, and the currency was used as inconvertible paper money, with various denominations issued from 5 livres (the unit of currency before the franc) to 100 livres. After the outbreak of war with Austria in the spring of 1792, more was issued, and the real value fell, reaching 30% of the face value in July 1793. The Mountain Party's economic control temporarily restored it to 50%, but after the Thermidor Reaction in July 1794, it fell rapidly, reaching 3% in September 1795, and the Directory finally abolished it in March 1796. This excessive issuance of inconvertible paper money and economic fluctuations caused by inflation had a major impact on the progress of the Revolution.
