Mangalore (English spelling)
Dakshin is a port city on the Arabian Sea in the southwest of Karnataka, southwest of India. It is the administrative capital of the Kannad district. It traded with Arabia from the 14th century, was occupied by Portugal in the mid-16th century, and became part of the Mysore princely state in 1763, when a shipbuilding base was established. It was handed over to the British in 1999. With the Western Ghats as its hinterland, it ships agricultural and forestry products such as cashew nuts, coffee, teak, coconuts, sandalwood, rice, and cardamom. In recent years, it has been developed into the fourth largest port on the Arabian Sea after Mumbai (Bombay), Goa, and Cochin, and is an export port for iron ore. Cotton textiles and roofing tiles are the major industries, and the city also produces porcelain and coconut fiber products. It is one of the centers of Christianity in the country, and is run by the Roman Catholic Church, with three colleges belonging to Mangalore University. Population: 272,819 (1991).
