Adanson, Michel

Adanson, Michel
Born: April 7, 1727, Aix-en-Provence
Died: August 3, 1806. French naturalist in Paris. While in Senegal in 1748 as a clerk for the French East India Company, he studied the flora, fauna and minerals, and published the results in the Natural History of Senegal (1757). He is also known for criticizing C. Linnaeus's system, which focused only on certain characteristics, as an artificial system that did not reflect natural relationships, and for creating a unique classification system. His system aimed to take all characteristics into account, placed importance on the rank of families, and incorporated statistical methods, but it was not necessarily popular and was overshadowed by C. Linnaeus's system.
