...Ion-molecule reactions play an important role in these fields, and mass spectrometry is also deeply involved in the study of their dynamics. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which emerged in 1959, has since made remarkable progress. Because it is effective in the analysis of multi-component samples and in trace analysis, it is used to confirm and identify trace amounts of chemical substances (mainly organic compounds) remaining in environmental media such as the atmosphere and hydrosphere, or in living organisms, and has become indispensable in environmental science.
